a round neck and plain wide straps up top, and then the dress does the one thing it was designed to do: it opens at the waist. a cut-out on each side, shaped like a curve rather than a slash, so the bodice and the skirt read as two pieces held together across the small of the back.

from there the skirt flares out into a short, swinging mini that moves away from the body rather than sitting on it. the back closes with metal hooks at the neck, and there is a hidden in-seam zip at the side — no visible hardware anywhere.

oyster-white is the right word for the colour. it is not a bright white and it is not cream: it is a warm off-white with a pearl cast, which is what the satin finish does to it. in daylight it reads ivory; under a warm bulb it goes almost champagne.
