the lace is guipure — the heavy kind, built from solid embroidered motifs joined by bars rather than printed or appliquéd onto a net. look closely and there is no ground fabric at all: the flowers are the fabric, and the open space between them is just open space. that is why it holds its own shape instead of draping.

the design runs in bands down the skirt, large open blooms alternating with denser rosettes, and a few raised florals sitting proud of the surface. a straight column through the hip, a split at the centre front hem, and — the detail worth paying for — the hem is not hemmed. the lace is cut to its own scalloped edge and left there, so the flowers finish the skirt.
