a jonathan simkhai dress in a dark chocolate ground scattered with cream and gold — an abstract painterly print, strokes rather than spots, that reads as animal from across a room and as brushwork up close.
the neckline is where the money went. the fabric is drawn up into a soft cowl on one side and pleated flat into the shoulder on the other, then caught at the collarbone by four small gilt buttons running on the diagonal. it is asymmetric without announcing itself, and it is the reason this does not read as an ordinary printed dress.
the body is gathered and ruched through the waist and released at one hip into a full handkerchief-hem skirt — points falling at uneven lengths so the hem moves on its own. sleeveless, fully lined, exposed zip at the centre back.
