an a.l.c. pleated halter maxi in a deep rust — the whole dress accordion-pleated from the neckband to the floor, with the pleats so fine and so even that the colour shifts between cinnamon and oxblood as the light moves across them.
the construction is the thing. a high smocked band at the neck, fastening at the back with three mother-of-pearl buttons. below it the pleated bodice blouses softly and is caught by a wide smocked waistband — several inches deep, elastic shirring worked in rows, which is what holds the waist without a zip or a seam cutting across it. from there the pleats release into a full maxi skirt that moves like water and settles back into line.
the fabric, plainly: one hundred percent polyester — but the label is specific about which one. made in china of japanese fabric, which is the tradition that produces the best permanent pleating in the world. it is why these pleats are this crisp and why they will stay that way.
dry clean only. never iron a permanently pleated garment — heat is the one thing that destroys the pleats, and it cannot be undone.
